Abstract

Plato’s view on bodily pleasures in the Phaedo is usually described as ascetic. But recently some scholars have developed a different way of understanding the view. According to their interpretation, which is called the ‘evaluative’ in contrast with the ascetic one, Socrates suggests in the Phaedo not that we stay away from bodily pleasures but that we take a correct attitude toward them. The goal of this article is to examine the validity of the evaluative interpretation on the basis of the close reading of the central passages where the two interpretation collide. I argue that while the evaluative interpretation is right in emphasizing that the correct attitude toward bodily pleasures is an essential aspect of the philosopher’s life, still it leaves out the importance of actively staying away from them because they can distort the very attitude the philosopher has. I also consider whether Plato’s view in the Phaedo can be understood as fundamentally hedonistic as some scholars suggest; and argue that it conflicts with the fundamental message of the Phaedo.
