Abstract

According to the Socrates in the Republic, the philosophers, who have seen the form of the Good in the intelligible realm, would be eager to spend their time above and unwilling to occupy themselves with human affairs. They are, however, not allowed to remain there, but are compelled to return to the prisoners in the cave and share their labors and honors by ruling the city. It is because the people in the cave will be benefited and eventually become happy, only when the philosophers care for the others. Nevertheless, are the philosophers, who are not allowed to do what they want to, happy? Two lines of interpretation have been presented: 1) the philosophers are, in fact, not compelled to rule, or 2) the philosophers, who are forced to rule, would not be happy, eventually. I argue in this paper that there are two separate periods in the philosophers's lives: on the one hand, living as philosophers, who are allowed to stay out of the cave, and on the other hand, living as the ruler-philosophers, who should remain in the city. While living as the ruler-philosophers, they are not only forced to rule but also do want to rule the city for the sake of all. As long as the ruler-philosopher want to rule while remaining in the city, they are happy to do their own work.
