아리스토텔레스의 학적 연역(apodeixis)과 관련하여 많은 논쟁들이 있으나, 논자는 학적 연역이 인과적 설명인가 아니면 이미 알려진 것들의 단순한 제시인가, 그리고 학적 연역이 지식을 전달하는가 아니면 이해를 전달하는가 하는 문제에 주된 관심이 있다. 이런 문제들과 관련한 기존의 논의들은 크게 두 가지 방향에서 이루어지고 있는 것으로 정리된다. 하나는 학적 연역이 이미 발견된 것들을 단순히 배열하는 방법으로서 지식을 제시하고 전달하는 교육방법이라는 입장이고, 다른 하나는 학적 연역이 이미 발견된 것들인 원인(중명사)을 밝혀줌으로써 설명하고 어떤 것을 이해하게 하며 이 이해를 전달한다는 입장이다. 논자는 후자의 입장을 지지하는 근거들을 보다 명료하게 함으로써 이 입장을 더욱 설득력 있는 것으로 만들고자 한다. 그 근거들은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 아리스토텔레스에 따르면, 우리는 학적 연역 이전에는 보편적으로만 이해되고 있던 어떤 것을 학적 연역을 얻음으로써 절대적으로 이해하게 되는데, 이 이해는 이미 알려진 것과 다른 것이다. 따라서 교육은 이미 알려진 것과 다른 절대적 의미의 이해를 전달할 것이다. 둘째, 학적 연역은 그 전제들이 갖추어야 할 조건들을 충족시킴으로써 학적 이해를 산출하는 연역이다. 또한 학적 연역은 결론과 그것의 원인(전제 또는 중명사) 사이에 성립하는 인과관계를 밝히는 인과적 설명이며, 이를 통하여 절대적 이해, 즉 학적 이해가 획득된다. 셋째 이와 같이 학적 연역에 의하여 산출되는 인식상태(hexis)인 학적 이해는 또한 학적 연역을 하는 능력, 즉 설명하는 능력이기도 하다. 이해하는 것은 설명할 수 있는 것이다. 그렇다면 이해를 가진 사람은 설명할 수 있는 사람이다. 이런 사람은 인과적 설명을 제시함으로써 학적 연역에 의하여 산출된 학적 이해를 전달할 것이다. 물론 이때 학적 이해는 이미 알려진 지식에 불과한 것이 아님은 분명하다.
Abstract
Aristotle says that an demonstration is productive of demonstrative understanding in Posterior Analytics. we come to understand something by having demonstration. The person who has understanding is the person who knows how to explain, and so he is able to impart rather understanding than knowledge to somebody. According to Aristotle, demonstrative understanding must proceed from premisses which are true, primitive, immediate, better known than, prior to, and explanatory of the conclusions. Only if the conditions are met, there can be a demonstration and it will bring about understanding. According to Aristotle, we think we understand something absolutely when we think that we know that the cause from which the fact results is the cause of that fact. An demonstration is a piece of reasoning which brings to light the causes and reasons for something's being the case. The understanding in absolute sense is acquired by demonstration. Demonstrative understanding is not simply the state brought about by demonstration, but also it is hexis, a dispositional capacity whereby we demonstrate. It is at once brought about by and is the capacity to engage in demonstration. we come to understand something by having it explained to us; to understand is in turn to be able to explain.
