본 연구는 장애학을 비판이론으로 재구성하기 위한 이론적 시도로서, 사회적 고통의 관점에서 장애를 역량 접근과 연결시켜 이해하는 통합적 이론틀을 제시한다. 장애학은 태생적으로 사회적학제적실천지향적해방적 특성을 지니며, 이는비판이론의 자기반성적학제적유물론적해방적 성격과 상당 수준 일치한다. 이러한 이론적 친화성을 토대로, 장애학과 비판이론의 통합은 사회적 장애모델의이분법적 한계를 넘어서는 방향으로 전개될 수 있다. 장애학은 장애를 개인의손상에 부가되는 사회 구조의 산물로 이해하는 사회적 모델을 중심으로 발전해왔으나, 이 모델은 손상과 장애의 이분법적 구분으로 인해 장애의 복잡한 차원을간과한다는 비판을 받아왔다. 본 연구는 개인적 요인과 사회적 환경의 상호작용을포괄하는 역량 접근을 통해 장애를 ‘역량 박탈’의 문제로 재개념화하고, 이를통해 장애학이 현대 자본주의 사회의 병리현상을 진단하는 비판이론으로 발전할수 있는 가능성을 제시한다. 이러한 통합적 접근은 일차적으로는 손상과 장애의관계를 사회 존재론적 차원에서 재해석하고, 현대 자본주의 사회의 구조적 모순을비판적으로 분석하는 비판적 장애학의 이론적 기반을 강화할 수 있다. 궁극적으로는 ‘비판적 장애학’을 넘어 장애학 그 자체를 비판이론의 한 형태, 즉 ‘장애학적비판이론’으로 재구성할 수 있도록 유도한다.
Abstract
This study proposes an integrated theoretical framework for reconstructing disability studies as critical theory by connecting disability to the capability approach through the lens of social suffering. Disability studies inherently embodies social, interdisciplinary, practice-oriented, and emancipatory characteristics, closely aligning with critical theory’s self-reflective, interdisciplinary, materialist, and emancipatory nature. Building on this theoretical affinity, the integration of disability studies and critical theory can overcome the limitations of the social model of disability. By employing the capability approach, this study reconceptualizes disability as capability deprivation. This integrated approach enables disability studies to function as critical theory, diagnosing pathological phenomena within contemporary capitalist society. This framework not only reinterprets the impairment-disability relationship at a social-ontological level but also lays theoretical foundations for reconstructing disability studies itself as a form of critical theory—a disability studies-based critical theory.
