장애를 ‘할 수 없음’이나 ‘무능함’으로 규정하고, 그것을 차별과 혐오의 원인으로 삼는 것은 사회적으로 심각한 문제이다. 그렇지만 장애가 단지 사회적 구성물만은 아니며, 신체의 물질적 손상, 보충, 변형과 더불어, 그 신체와 여타 신체들 사이에 이루어진 관계 생성물이다. 장애에 대한 이러한 접근은 장애 이론의 계보에서 ‘장애의 물질적 전환(material turn of disability)’을 요청한다. 본 논의는 비판적 장애 이론의 새로운 이론적 접근을 분석한다. 그것은 회집체(assemblage)로서의 장애 개념을 통해서 장애를 신체 손상, 보충, 변형의 물질성에 근거해서 여러 신체 사이의 상호의존적인 관계성의 생성물임을 주장한다. 나아가 기존 이론들이 간과했던 장애인의 체화된 고통을 강조한다. 장애 회집체를관통하는 고통의 정동은 손상된 신체의 불가피한 상호의존성의 양상이며, 장애에서 생성과 변화의 특수한 양상이다. 이러한 이해는 장애를 능력주의 질곡에서거리를 두게 하고 타자와의 공존에 기댄 자기생산적인 삶으로 설명하는 가능성을 제시한다.
Abstract
It is a actual problem to define disability as 'inability to do' or 'incompetence' and to make it a cause of discrimination and hatred. Disability, however, is not just a social construct, but effects of intra-relation between the body with material impairment, prosthetic supplementation, and transformation, and other bodies. This approach to disability calls for a ‘material turn of disability’ in disability theories. The article analyzes a new theoretical approach of critical disability theory. Through the concept of disability as an assemblage, it asserts that disability is a product of interdependent relationships between different bodies based on the materiality of impairment, supplementation, and transformation of the body. Furthermore, the affect of pain that penetrates the disabled assemblages is a aspect of the inevitable interdependence of the impaired body and a specific feature of the generative change in disability. This understanding suggests the possibility of explaining disability as a autopoietic life based on coexistence with others
