초록
Benjamin Hobson introduced systematic Western medical knowledge to China, with his writings serving as conduits for knowledge and cultural exchange between China and the West. His work, especially Quanti Xinlun, went beyond merely introducing medical knowledge; it reshaped perceptions of the human body and acted as a catalyst for a modern world view to be adopted in China. His careful use of detailed anatomical illustrations, collaborative translations with Chinese scholars, and selective editing of medical information drew the attention of many Chinese, leading to the emergence of reprinted editions. Above all, the illustrations in Quanti Xinlun went beyond mere embellishment, symbolically interacting with the narrative text. Recognizing the Chinese public appreciation of illustrations in storytelling, Hobson visualized the precision and scientific validity of Western medicine, enhancing the work’s persuasive impact. He crafted a more refined version of Quanti Xinlun through a careful editing process, synthesizing various perspectives and responses, even those that were at times contradictory. The influence of Quanti Xinlun began with authorities in Guangzhou and quickly spread across all social classes, broadening the acceptance of Western medical superiority, at least in the realm of medicine, and paving the way for a possible shift in attitudes toward foreigners. Quanti Xinlun, along with Hobson’s subsequent works on modern knowledge, ultimately became a cornerstone in China’s modern medical education.
