This study delves into how Fei Mu's film Spring in a Small Town embraces and develops the sorrowful narratives of the Mandarin Ducks and Butterflies. To be specific, various methods are employed in this paper, such as comparing the plot structures of Mandarin Ducks and Butterflies films to Spring in a Small Town, articulating how sound effects such as voice-over and folk music encapsulate the film's message, and analyzing the use of dilapidated architectural spaces as a means of creating a sense of ruin. In summary, Spring in a Small Town not only inherits the literary legacy of Mandarin Ducks and Butterflies but also creatively applies it to establish a new modern aesthetic in the early era of Chinese film.
Abstract
