이 논문은 전후 영화에 나타난 도시의 묘사를 검토한다. 중국감독 페이무(費穆, Fei Mu, 1906~1951)의 <어느 작은 마을의 봄>(小城之春, Spring in a Small Town, 1948)과 일본 감독 오즈 야스지로(小津安二郞, 1903~1963)의 <무네카타 자매들>(宗方姉妹, Munakata Sisters, 1950)이라는 두 편의 전후 영화에 대한 분석을 통해 나는 어떻게 도시의 영화적 이미지가 창조되고, 관객들이 이미지를 해석하며, 어떻게 도시의 이런 이미지가 결과적으로 관객들이 도시를 상상하는 방식을 조건화하는가를 탐구하고자 했다. 논문은 세 부분으로 구성된다. 첫 번째 부분에서 나는 이 두 영화의 기본 구조가 도시에 대한 유사한 표상 및 유사한 플롯을 가지고 있음을 논증하고자 했다. 둘째 부분에서 나는 이 두 영화가 1950년대, 1970~1980년대 그리고 2000년대에 들어오기까지 일관적으로 옛것 대 새것이라는 이분법적 틀 안에서 해석되어 왔으며, 그 결과 도시에 대한 정형화된 이미지에로 귀결되었음을 논증하고자 했다. 마지막으로 나는 <무네카타 자매들>의 한 장면에 대한 보다 세밀한 독해를 통해 도시 이미지에 대한 하나의 대안적 관점을 제안하고자 했다.
Abstract
This paper examines the depiction of cities in postwar film. Through an analysis of two postwar films—Spring in a Small Town (1948) by Chinese director Fei Mu (1906-1951), and Munakata Sisters (1950) by Japanese director Ozu Yasujirō (1903-1963)—I investigate how the cinematic images of cities are created, how viewers interpret these images, and how these images consequently condition the ways viewers imagine cities. The paper consists of three parts: first, I argue that the basic structures of the films are similar in the representation of cities and in plot. Second, I argue that criticism of these two films in the 1950s, 1970-80s, and 2000s has consistently interpreted these films with a dichotomous old-versus-new framework that has resulted in a stereotypical image of cities. Finally, I propose an alternative perspective on the images of cities through a close reading of one scene from Munakata Sisters.
