Abstract
This paper examines Fei Mu’s Spring in a Small Town, exploring the symbolic and functional roles of family space in historical trauma narratives. Through detailed analysis of the film’s key imagery—the dilapidated Dai family mansion and damaged town walls—it uncovers the complexity of the family as a private sphere amid 20th-century Chinese societal upheavals. The ruins represent postwar destruction and symbolize collective trauma, reflecting the collapse of traditional family ethics and individual existential struggles. Conversely, the town walls, a liminal space linking internal and external, past and future, embody both the desire for freedom and historical scars, hinting at modernity’s impact on family structures. The film skillfully blends micro-level family narratives with macro-level historical contexts, using nuanced depictions of space and deep emotional exploration to mirror postwar China’s spiritual crisis and cultural shifts. Family ethical dilemmas and characters’ choices offer profound reflections on tradition versus modernity and individual-society dynamics.
