Abstract

Until the 1990s, the only two anthologies of modern Korean poetry published in Chinese in Taiwan were “Selected Korean Poetry”(韓國詩選, 文星書店, 1964), translated by Korean poet Heo Se-wook(허세욱), and “Selected Korean Modern Poetry”(韓國現代詩選, 光啟書局, 1975), translated by Taiwanese poet Chen Chien-Wu(陳千武). Heo’s translation drew on his personal connections in the Taiwanese literary world and his work with the magazine Modern Poetry(≪現代詩≫), while Chen’s translation was closely tied to his interactions with Korean poet Kim Kwang-rim(김광림) and Japanese-based Korean poet Li Ki-dong(이기동), as well as his work with the magazine Li(≪笠≫). Therefore, the creation of these two anthologies can be seen not only as individual achievements of the translators but, from a broader perspective, as a reflection of the respective achievements of two major Taiwanese poetry magazines and schools of poetry in their internationalization strategies. This article compares the similarities and differences in the publishing backgrounds, anthology formats, and publication significance of two Korean poetry anthologies to explore the internationalization of Taiwanese poetry, especially its history of exchange with the Korean poetry community.
