초록
In his later years, Kobayashi Masaru(小林勝. 1927-1971), a Korean-born novelist, wrote not only a personal history of events he himself had experienced over a span of 43 years, including Japan’s defeat and the Korean War, but went far beyond this, attempting to grasp substantively the history of Japanese violence against Korea. One of the capstones of his life and career was the novel 「夜の次の風の夜」(1967), which attempted to capture this historical perspective. The novel is set in a small town deep within the mountains of Korea in 1938. What sets this novel apart is not so much its narrative content as its unique method of narration. Kobayashi demonstrates his full powers of literary imagination in the novel’s depiction of the suffering of a Korean youth under intense torture by the Japanese authorities, and in the passion and anger of the Korean students who meet secretly in a dilapidated schoolhouse in order to reclaim the language and education that was stolen from them. By superimposing on this narrative the story of Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s invasion of Korea, Kobayashi illustrates in three dimensions the anguish of the Korean people, and the genealogy of ethnic self-awareness and pride fostered through resistance to Japanese aggression.
