이 연구는 대학 교양수업에서 조지 오웰의 『동물농장』 애니메이션을 활용하여 학생들이 능력주의와 공정성 담론을 비판적으로 성찰하고, 리더십과 인격적 가치에 대해 내면화하는 과정을 분석한 질적 사례연구이다. 충북 소재 4년제 대학의 일반교양수업에 참여한 38명의 학생을 대상으로 활동지와 성찰일지(reflection paper)를 수집하였고, 귀납적 내용분석을 통해 학습자들의 인식 변화와 성찰 내용을 범주화하였다. 분석 결과, 학생들은 능력주의 대한 재고, 공정과 배분에 대한 성찰을 보여주었다. 또한 리더십에 대해 도덕성과 협력의 중요성을 인식하며, 자신이 속한 사회현상에 적용하며 비판적 의견을 내는 것이 관찰되었다. 『동물농장』의 우화적 상징과 애니메이션의 시청각 효과는 학습자들로 하여금 사람다움과 시민성에 대한 도덕적 상상력을 확장하게 하였으며, 이는 인격교육의 유의미한 성과로 이어졌다. 본 연구는 문학 애니메이션 콘텐츠를 활용한 교양수업이 윤리의식 함양과 공동체적 책임의식을 강화하는 인격교육의 장이 될 수 있음을 시사한다.
Abstract
This study investigates how George Orwell’s Animal Farm animation affected students’ critical reflection on meritocracy and fairness within a general education course. Conducted at a four-year university in Korea, this qualitative case study analyzed activity sheets and reflection papers from 38 undergraduates. Findings show that students reexamined performance-based values, recognized the difference between equality and fairness, and deepened their understanding of structural inequality. They also developed moral awareness, empathy, and a sense of leadership as social responsibility. The symbolic narrative and visual elements of the animation effectively expanded students’ moral imagination and personhood. These results highlight the educational value of literature-based content for character education in higher education.
