Abstract

This study conducts an in-depth analysis of the ethical values embedded in the ancient East Asian classic Thousand Character Classic(Cheonjamun, 千字文) to propose a reflective approach and East Asian perspectives on contemporary sustainability crises. Combining classical textual hermeneutics with normative qualitative content analysis(QCA), the research identifies seven core ethical categories: Ecological Adaptability(生態適應性), Human-Centered Inclusivity(人本包容性), Ethical Prosperity(倫理的繁榮性), Peace and Justice(平和正義性), Global Cooperation(國際協力性), Responsibility for Future Generations(未來世代責任性), and Moral Cultivation(道德修養性). A systematic linkage framework is developed to demonstrate how these categories correspond with the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs), and the key principles and actions of the Pact for the Future(PFF). Rather than diminishing the scholarly value of classical literature and philosophy, this interdisciplinary approach reaffirms their enduring significance as cultural resources that provide profound insights and practical guidance for addressing today’s complex global challenges. Ultimately, this study argues that the Thousand Character Classic offers universal ethical foundations and culturally nuanced East Asian perspectives for shaping sustainable futures. By reinterpreting the traditional ideal of Sŏngin-jido(成人之道, “the Way of Becoming a Complete Person”), the research highlights the relevance of East Asian classical wisdom in enriching global sustainability discourse and advancing debates on global governance. The academic foundation is further strengthened by clearly presenting research questions, an analytical framework, and a supporting conceptual model. Crucially, the study provides a deeply reasoned qualitative justification for the identified 'matching' between specific phrases from The Thousand Character Classic and sustainability elements, rigorously proving the academic validity of this ethics-based sustainability linkage framework. Special attention is given to The Thousand Character Classic's role as a pivotal foundational text (Monghak, 蒙学) for the holistic development of children in East Asian societies, aiming to realize the 'Way of Becoming a Complete Person' (成人之道). This classical wisdom is argued to offer alternative insights into contemporary socio-scientific issues (SSI), such as 'educational involution' (教育内卷), and to contribute to the East Asian localization and implementation of the SDGs. Ultimately, this research seeks universal ethical foundations and practical guidelines for a sustainable future through the reinterpretation of East Asian classics, thereby presenting a culturally informed East Asian perspective to the discourse on global governance.
