Abstract

This study analyzes the collapse of Spanish exceptionalism, in which far-right parties failed to enter parliament for forty years following the Franco regime in 1975. Since VOX’s initial breakthrough in the 2018 Andalusian regional elections, the party secured 52 seats in the 2019 general election and 33 seats in 2023. By tracing the rise and consolidation of Spain’s far-right, the article examines multilayered factors such as economic crisis, the politicization of historical memory, and algorithmic digital populism. Special emphasis is placed on the causes behind VOX’s loss of 19 seats in 2023—namely discursive fatigue, the defection of moderate voters, and strategic recalculation— and the study identifies mechanisms by which VOX’s policies erode the democratic principle of pluralism from within. The article contends that the growth and adjustment of far-right populism marks not just a transformation of Spain’s party system, but a self-negating reconfiguration of Spanish democracy itself.
