Abstract

This paper investigates the way to understand the hidden characteristics of network societies which have become accelerated at the national level these days. Two abstract models, the “Braess’ Paradox” and the “Newcomb's Problem,” are presented to show the counter-intuitive nature of nework soeicties. These models are efficient heuristic tools in elucidating the non-sensical, non-rational features of network societies. Upon the discussion of these abstract models, this paper extends its theoretical implications to the area of network-related policies. In particular, details on the features of probabilism, instability, self-organized criticality, and externalities are discussed in order to draw some policy recommendations.
