초록

This essay aims to examine the different concepts of culture, namely mono-culturality, multiculturality, interculturality and transculturality analysing a cinematic text, Kurz und Schmerzlos (in English Short Sharp Shock, 1998) by ``Turkish-German`` filmmaker, Fatih Akin. Fatih Akin contributes to disrupting the general assumption about cultural purity, which examine the potential of hybridity. His films are frequently criticized for reducing their protagonists to stereotypes, portraying the migrant as victim and focusing excessively on conflict of an intercultural or intracultural kind. Akin`s Kurz und Schmerzlos is a cinematic example which shows the process of development from mono-culturality to transculturalism. Throughout the film, Akin surpass the binary of a dominant German culture and Turkish victims which was the theme of Turkish-German cinema before and after German unification. What is distinguish about the film Kurz und Schmerzlos is that the on-screen conflicts are not between Turkish minority and dominant German culture but between perspectives for individual character. The film shows more transcultural tendency rather than follows the Herder-inspired concepts which the viewer can observe in pre-and post German unification cinema. However in Kurz und Schmerzlos the spectator can see monocultural concepts of culture which continually reinforces in the narrative of film. In particular, the traditional concept of culture emerges from the Turkish side rather than to the German side. The absence of German also causes Turkish protagonist to be isolated from the majority of German. Even though Turkish main protagonist attempts to adopt to the surrounding culture, he fails to reestablish his new life in German. Consequently, Akin`s Kurz und Schmerzlos succeed in developing transcultural dimensions yet has still inclination towards the monoculturality to the Turkish side rather than to the German side.
