Abstract
This study analyzed the factors influencing support for government policies that aim to prevent the spread of disinformation. Specifically, we examined the impact of attribution of responsibility for the causes of disinformation on policy support. Additionally, we tested the mediating effect of emotions between (a) responsibility attributions and (b) policy opinions, and the moderating role of third-person effect. The results showed that corporate responsibility attributions for disinformation, led to greater anger toward corporations, which led to support for regulatory policies on disinformation. The mediating effect of emotions resulting from responsibility attribution on policy support increased as the third-person effect decreased. In other words, the effect of corporate responsibility attributions on policy opinions mediated by anger (1) increased when the third-person effect was weaker (i.e., when individuals believed they were as affected as others) and (2) decreased when the third-person effect was stronger (i.e., when individuals believed others were more affected than themselves).
