Abstract
This study examined how public’s responsibility judgments and their policy opinions on climate change issues could be affected by media attributions. Specifically, media attributions were categorized as (1) individual attributions (e.g., lack of personal effort) and (2) societal attributions (e.g., industrial activities by companies), we tested how these media attributions influence public’s (1) regulatory and (2) supportive intentions. In Study 1, we conducted a content analysis to examine how South Korean media framed attributions for climate change. Results showed that during the first period (2007–2011), individual and societal attributions were mentioned at similar rates. In contrast, during the second period (2019–2023), societal attributions surged while individual attributions declined sharply. In Study 2, we tested the effects of attribution type (individual vs. societal) on responsibility judgments and policy opinions (e.g., support vs. punishment). Results showed that corporate attribution frames did not directly influence support for corporate regulation but indirectly affected policy opinions by increasing public perceptions of corporate responsibility. Theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed.
