Abstract
In order to verify the media-mediated communication in the field of diplomacy, this study divided into hard power and soft power to examine the differences in the reporting patterns of foreign media related to South Korea. Next, in order to identify the role of media diplomacy in the transnational issue of COVID-19, this study analyzed foreign media reports related to COVID-19 era South Korea. To verify this, the New York Times, which has secured a reputation in international reports, was selected as the subject of analysis, and related articles in South Korea were analyzed. As a result of this study, foreign media cited sources related to COVID-19 era South Korea according to hard power practices. The New York Times similarly used the nationality, status, statement tone, and statement contents of the source in COVID-19 and hard power. And in the New York Times, the situation and response of COVID-19 era South Korea remained around rather than around the center of the article. The COVID-19 era South Korea information was used as a simple case for comparison or introduction in various types of articles such as straight, commentary, and opinion articles. Finally, the New York Times still had high interest in South Korea's hard power. In the New York Times, South Korean hard power was reported more centrally than soft power, and soft power was mainly cited as an example.
