Abstract
Virtual Reality as a realistic media is a useful communication technology that can promote human mental health. The purpose of this research is how the using channels for VR experiences and the awareness for specific materials in VR content affect the perception of presence in VR and the reduction of anxiety among VR content users. For this purpose, an experiment was conducted with 50 adults experiencing VR healing content created with the theme of mountains and seas in HMD and 2D monitor. The results of this study revealed that, although the anxiety reduced before and after using VR healing content, there was no difference according to the using channels for VR experiences even though demographic variables were taken into account. Among the materials of VR healing content, the higher the awareness of the ‘deer’ in VR, the higher the perception of presence, and a causal model in which anxiety was reduced through that presence was confirmed. These results showed that having experiences with specific materials in VR healing content can increase psychological well-being. This study has significance in facilitating follow-up research for communication researchers by providing an empirical foundation in developing the healthcare VR content and materials.
