Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in the biology-related career orientation, career preparation behavior, and career decision level of college freshmen majoring in biology by gender, and to explore the factors affecting biology-related career orientation, thereby providing implications for career guidance. The results of the study showed that the male students’ scores on “value recognition of biology-related careers” was statistically significantly higher than those of female students(p<.05). In addition, the male students’ scores on “tool-preparation activities,” a sub-factor of career preparation behavior, were statistically significantly higher than those of female students(p<.05). As a result of examining the correlation between biology-related career orientation, career preparation behavior, and career decision level by gender, the male students showed statistically significant relationships between biology-related career orientation and career preparation behavior (r=.496, p<.01), and biology-related career orientation and career decision level(r=.303, p<.05). On the other hand, the female students showed statistically significant relationships between career preparation behavior and career decision level(r=.340, p<.01). Finally, the results of multiple regression analysis by gender showed that the factor influencing the male students' biology-related career preference was “preference for biology learning,” while the factors influencing the female students’ biology-related career preference were ‘preference for biology learning’ and “need for biology-related career information.”
