Abstract

The concept of social structure has long occupied a central position in archaeological interpretations of past societies. Since the early twentieth century, when structural-functionalism provided a dominant theoretical framework, archaeology has increasingly incorporated perspectives from modern sociology that emphasize the role of social actors, thereby enabling more dynamic explanations of social change in the past. Meanwhile, archaeology has engaged with significant methodological and theoretical issues relevant to proper understanding of diachronic/synchronic variation of social structures. These include efforts to identify social complexity through material remains, to account for inconsistencies between social principles reconstructed from different lines of archaeological evidence, and to adopt multi-scalar approaches to social transformation. In Korean archaeology, such developments have been actively employed to interpret the rapidly growing body of archaeological data since the 2000s. Nevertheless, it remains questionable whether these concepts have been consistently and rigorously applied, and whether the social structures of Korean prehistory have been sufficiently theorized in a productive and systematic manner.
