Abstract
During the 15th to 11th centuries BCE, regional characteristics of Bronze Age cultures in Manchuria became increasingly pronounced in response to varying degrees of climatic and environmental change. By the 11th century BCE, the climate in the western Liao River region began to recover, maintaining relatively warm and humid conditions until the 8th–7th centuries BCE. During this period, the cultural sphere of the Shiertaiyingzi culture in the southeastern Liaoxi region expanded into the Liao River Plain. In contrast to the decline of the Upper Xiajiadian culture in western Liaoxi, the Shiertaiyingzi tradition entered a period of florescence. By the 6th–5th centuries BCE, this Liaoxi-derived tradition—particularly the Zhengjiawazi-type assemblage—extended into the Liao River Plain, where it began to emphasize regionally distinct bronze artifacts. These developments reflect a phase of increasing cultural interaction and hybridity across Bronze Age societies in Manchuria. Amid rapidly shifting environmental and sociopolitical conditions, community leaders were likely required to adopt flexible and adaptive strategies for survival. The material remnants of Bronze Age culture in Manchuria today offer enduring testimony to the cooperation, competition, and coexistence that characterized this transformative era.
