Abstract

For all six middle school textbooks as 《History ②》 from 2015 curriculum, mainly reviewed contents are as followed ; history curriculum for elementary, middle, and high school, artifacts from the Paleolithic age, starting period of Paleolithic and Bronze age, description of dolmen, Kojoson's sphere of influence, Chamseongdan altar, and Hansagun. 1) A very distinctive point in the 2015 history curriculum is that the amount of content for pre-modern history in elementary, middle, high school courses has drastically reduced. Contents of the Paleolithic, Neolithic, and Bronze age were all taken out from the elementary school curriculum. As for the middle school curriculum, the contents of Prehistoric times and various countries were reduced by more than one page compared to the previous textbooks. High school curriculum is focusing more on the modern and contemporary era rather than the pre-modern era, causing the contents for pre-modern history to be highly reduced. 2) 4 out of 6 textbooks clearly specified the beginning of the Paleolithic era as 700,000 years ago, whereas 2 textbooks did not contain the information. Out of all curriculums from elementary school to high school, the only time one can learn about the prehistoric time is middle school, which is very unfortunate as well, for there are some textbooks that don't mention the beginning of the Paleolithic era. 3) All 6 textbooks from the 2015 curriculum describe the beginning of the Bronze age as 2000 B.C. 4) Improved in the matter of having misrepresentation of dolmens compared to the previous textbooks, but there are still errors found to be corrected further. 5) Besides from one textbook, none of the textbooks are successfully reflecting recent research findings in the distribution of table type dolmen and lute-shaped bronze dagger which widens the border of Kojoson. 6) Mentions of Chamseongdan related to Kojoson are completely non-existent in all textbooks. The location of Lelang Commandery is not yet verified, however, most maps indicate it as the current location of Pyongyang, which requires to be reconsidered. The 2009 curriculum has reduced the contents for pre-modern history compared to the previous curriculum. It is repeated in the 2015 curriculum, giving the impression that the history curriculum is heading to an extremely abnormal direction. For future curriculum, it is very much recommended to at least double up the amount of contents for pre-modern history in middle school 《History ②》. To conclude, I would like to ask whether our history education is on the right track when we are drastically reducing the pre-modern history contents for the 2015 curriculum, along with deleting the contents of Northeast project led by Chinese government.
