지역발전에 기여하는 요인으로서 사회적 자본은 기존의 지역개발 이론에서는 암묵적으로 취급되어 왔다. 이 글에서는 사회적 자본의 역할을 지역발전의 핵심개념인 지역혁신, 지역네트워크와 관련지어 설명함으로써 사회적 자본이 지역발전에 어떻게 기여하는 지에 대하여 명시적으로 나타내 보이고 이를 통계적으로 검증하고자 하였다. 또한 기존의 이론에서는 사회적 자본의 부정적인 측면으로 이해함으로써 사회적 자본의 개념에 혼란을 초래했던 부분을 사회적 구속이라는 개념으로 사회적 자본과 구분하여 정의하고 사회적 구속이 지역발전에 미치는 영향에 관하여도 연구하였다. 그리고 이를 통계적으로 검증하기 위하여 미국의 358개 도시지역을 대상으로 이들 지역의 일인당 소득을 종속변수로 하고 사회적 자본, 사회적 구속, 그리고 산업연관관계 등 기타 지역발전 요인을 독립변수로 하는 다중회귀분석을 한 결과 지역의 일인당 소득과 사회적 자본 간에 정(正)의 관계가 있음을 나타내 보였다.
Abstract
Social capital had been dealt with as an implicit contributor to regional development in the existing regional development theories. In this literature, I showed explicitly how social capital contributes to regional development by explaining the role of social capital in related with regional innovation and network which are the key concepts of regional development. I also defined the concept of social bondage distinguished from social capital and studied its relationship with regional development. In the existing literatures, social bondage had been understood as a negative aspect of social capital, bringing a little confusion to the concept of social capital. To this end, I researched the relationship between the regional development and social capital, social bondage, and other variables like industrial linkage of three hundred fifty eight Metropolitan Statistical Areas of the USA. In result, I demonstrated the positive relationship between social capital and regional development.
