Abstract

This study surveyed student and teacher perceptions of academic dishonesty and cheating. The subjects were 463 students and 126 teachers in 3 high schools in Seoul. The measure used was the Cheating Questionnaire developed by the researcher. The results indicated that academic dishonesty and cheating was a serious problem in high schools. In addition, there were statistically significant differences between student and teacher perceptions of this issue. Students were more sensitive to the seriousness of cheating and were more inclined to attribute cheating to the individual characteristics of students. On the other hand, teachers were more knowledgeable about the negative influences and types of dishonesty and cheating, and agreed more on the efficacy of prevention strategies. Teachers appeared to be more likely to underestimate student's experiences of dishonesty and cheating. There were no significant differences in their attribution to the characteristics of subjects. These results were discussed in terms of the implications for the moral developmental approach to cheating and educational practice.
