이 연구는 한국청소년 패널자료를 통해 비공식적 낙인의 효과를 중심으로 비행을 반복적으로 저지르게 되는 과정을 이해하고자 하였다. 비행의 죄질에 따라 비행의 유형을 경비행과 중비행으로 구분하여 살펴본 결과, 경비행과 같이 사소한 비행을 반복적으로 저지르는 과정에서 뿐만 아니라 중비행과 같이 보다 심각한 비행을 반복적으로 저지르는 과정에서도 비공식낙인의 효과를 확인하였다. 특히, 경비행을 반복적으로 저지르는 비행과정에서 나타난 비공식낙인의 영향력이 중비행을 반복적으로 저지르는 비행과정에서보다 크게 나타났다. 이러한 연구결과는 비행을 지속적으로 저지르는 청소년에 대한 정책마련이라는 점에서 의의를 지니며 비행유형에 따라 적절한 대안의 필요성을 제기하고 있다.

Abstract

This study seeks to test a labeling theory on persistent delinquency. The data used in this study was compiled from the Korea Youth Panel, compiled by the National Youth Policy Institute. Delinquency is classified into minor delinquency and serious delinquency. We conclude that juveniles who engage in delinquency experience informal labeling and juveniles who are informally labeled engage in repeat delinquency. Therefore, informal labeling has a significant effect on repeated delinquency. In particular, it was found that Informal labeling has a greater effect on minor delinquency than serious delinquency. The findings of this study have important implications in that they demonstrate how positive attitudes and understanding of juvenile delinquents must form the basis of prevention programs for persistent delinquency. The findings also suggests that future research should attempt to diversify its search for the causes of persistent delinquency.
