Abstract
This study, grounded in labeling theory, investigates whether the effect of labeling on juvenile delinquency varies according to the structural characteristics. To this end, data from the Korea Youth Panel Survey (KYPS), provided by the National Youth Policy Institute, were merged with district-level (Si/Gun/Gu) regional characteristics, and multilevel logistic regression was employed for analysis. The results show that adolescents’ labeling experiences are significantly and positively associated with increased delinquent behavior, and this relationship varies meaningfully depending on the degree of social disorganization in the region. Specifically, in areas with higher levels of social disorganization, the effect of perceived external labeling increased, whereas the effect of internalized labeling showed a slight decrease. In addition, the influence of protective factors such as teacher attachment and parental supervision also differed according to the structural context of the community. These findings suggest that labeling effects are not confined to the psychological reactions of individuals but interact with the structural environment of the communities in which adolescents reside. This study emphasizes the necessity of a multidimensional approach that extends beyond individual factors to include community-level structures in the formulation of juvenile delinquency prevention policies. It further proposes the need for locally tailored interventions aimed at mitigating the social conditions that intensify labeling experiences.
