청소년비행에 있어 낙인의 효과에 대한 경험적 연구 : 비공식 낙인을 중심으로

초록

이 연구의 목적은 종단적 자료를 이용해 낙인이론을 둘러싼 두 가지 핵심적 쟁점 사항을 경험적으로 검증하는 데 있다. 첫 번째는 낙인이 비행의 원인이 되는가의 문제이고, 두 번째는 낙인이론의 핵심 중 하나인 누가 낙인을 당하는가와 관련하여 청소년의 사회경제적 배경이 낙인에 대해 차별적 효과를 갖는가의 문제이다. 기존의 연구들은 주로 횡단적 자료를 통해 낙인의 효과를 검증하였으나, 이 연구는 한국청소년패널자료(KYPS)를 통해 시간적 선후관계에 기초한 인과모형을 설정하여 비공식 낙인이 비행에 미치는 영향력을 살펴보고, 시간을 고려했을 때 계층적 지위에 따라 비공식 낙인의 변화와 차이가 나타나는지 여부를 분석하였다. 특히 최근의 논의에서는 공식 낙인보다 비공식 낙인의 효과를 다루는 것이 낙인이론의 검증에 보다 부합된다고 보기 때문에 이 연구에서도 비공식 낙인에 초점을 맞추었다. 교차지체 패널모형 및 잠재성장모형을 적용하여 분석한 결과, 첫째로 낙인이 비행에 미치는 영향력보다는 비행이 낙인에 미치는 영향력이 상대적으로 큰 것으로 나타났으며, 둘째로 부모의 사회경제적 지위가 낮은 청소년일수록 비공식 낙인의 경험 가능성이 더 크고, 비공식 낙인이 일단 형성된 이후에도 쉽게 사라지지 않는다는 사실을 확인할 수 있었다.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine two controversial issues related to labeling theory by using longitudinal data. The first issue is the causal relationship between labeling and the delinquency itself. The second issue is in relation to whom is going to be labeled as a delinquent. Most previous studies have used cross-sectional data for their analyses. For this study, however, we used longitudinal data, I from the KYPS (Korea Youth Panel Survey). Nevertheless, since recent studies on labeling theory have focused on informal labeling rather than formal labeling, and have concluded that using informal labeling was the better way to examine labeling theory, this research also focused on the issue of informal labeling. In this vein, we investigated whether informal labeling has any effect on delinquency and have tried to determine whether the effect was different according to the socio-economic status of juveniles while also considering time-dimensions. As a result of using a cross-lagged panel model and latent growth model, we two important findings were made. The first is that the effect of delinquency on labeling was relatively greater than that of labeling on delinquency. The second is that juveniles whose parents had lower socio-economic status tended to experience informal labeling more frequently and once they are stigmatized by the people around them, the labeling effect did not disappeared easily.
