An Exploratory Study on the Opportunities and Challenges Faced by Children of Immigrant Workers within the Korean Education System

This study explores the opportunities and the challenges faced by the children of immigrant workers in the Korean education system, using in-depth interviews and participant observation. Even after they gain legal access to the public education system after a great deal of effort, they face a variety of barriers in many areas. They tend to find it hard to fit in at school, make friends or get along with their peers. Their educational achievement levels are poor and they often undergo undesirable experiences in the personality formation process. The unstable circumstances that immigrant workers and their families are faced with only makes these problems worse. Economic hardships and stress due to the immigration regulations are typical examples. To help them adjust to life in Korea and become healthy and productive members of this society, education as well as economic support should be provided. Further research needs to be conducted on how family and school related factors are associated with their experiences in the Korean education system.
