Abstract
Abstract A Study on the Ways to Solve the Problems in Elementary School of Foreign Workers' Children in South Korea Bae, Eun-joo(Hanyang University) This study attempts to analyze the school lives and problems of foreign workers' children in elementary schools and proposes how to solve their problems. To collect data, I observe the school lives of foreign workers' children in two elementary schools in Gyeonggi, and interview the children, their parents, school and local support center staff. The major results of this study are as follows: It seems that the children of foreign workers go to school without special problems as Korean students, but they suffer from various problems. Some of them have difficulties in adapting to their new school lives because of school grading system in Korea. They are also discriminated by color and thattheir motherlands are under-developed countries. Some of them have difficulties to establish friendly relationship with Korean students because of their lack of Korean language skills, and have not made necessary preparation because of their poor economic conditions. In particular, a few of the Mongolian students experience formations of identities as Korean and loss of their motherland. So, in order to make them overcome many problems and adapt Korean school lives, firstly, a flexible school grading system is needed with consideration to the development of their minds and bodies. Secondly, a multi-cultural education system for foreign and Korean students is needed, their parents, school and local support center staff. Finally, institutional after-school programs for the children of foreign workers are also needed. ▐ Key words: the foreign workers' children, problems, identities, discriminate, after-school programs, adapt, multicultural education
