저소득층 청소년을 위한 학교 기반 멘토링 프로그램의 효과: 과정 및 산물 효과성을 중심으로

초록

학교 현장에서 저소득층 청소년의 문제를 예방하고, 적극적인 학업지원을 위한 목적으로 활용되고 있는 대표적인 개입 방법으로 학교기반 멘토링 프로그램을 들 수 있다. 그러나 학교기반 멘토링 프로그램은 대부분 학교생활과 학업을 지원하는 예방프로그램의 성격을 많이 가지고 있고, 그러한 특성상 표적 문제를 설정하거나 즉각적인 효과를 검증하기 어려운 것이 사실이었다. 멘토링 프로그램 효과성을 연구한 대부분의 선행 연구들도 통제집단을 설정하지 않고, 단일 집단의 사전사후 변화만을 비교하거나 발달산물에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 사전검사 통제 없이 단순 비교한 경우가 대부분이었다. 이에 본 연구에서는 학교기반 멘토링 프로그램의 과정 산물 및 최종 산물 효과성을 검증하고자 31명의 멘토링 참여 청소년 집단과 동일한 고위험 상황인 66명의 통제집단을 대상으로 비동일 통제집단 전후 비교설계를 수행하고, 산물은 과정산물과 최종산물로 나누어 효과성을 검증하였다. 분석결과 성별, 연령, 가족구조, 사전검사 점수를 통제한 상태에서도 멘토링의 중간산물이라고 할 수 있는 관계지향적 산물에서는 사회적 지지, 성인역할모델의 존재, 성인역 부담 영역에서 유의미한 차이를 보였다. 최종 발달 산물에서도 자존감, 자기유능감, 학교에서의 흥미에서 집단 간 유의미한 차이를 보였다. 결론에서는 이러한 멘토링의 과정산물 효과성과 최종산물 효과성의 의미를 재조명하고, 학교 기반 멘토링 프로그램의 수행 시 고려해야할 다양한 실천적 함의를 제시하였다.

Abstract

School-based mentoring program is a promising from of intervention for adolescents in low-income families to prevent their problem behaviors and strengthen the connectedness to school and academic performance. However, variation in program goals may complicate research on the effectiveness of mentoring program, and most prior research have reported the effectiveness of mentoring program without control group or considering control variables which may affect the outcomes of program. Therefore this study employed a non-equivalent pretest-posttest control group design. The sample included 97 youths in low-income families. For intervention group, 31 students were recruited from among K school-based mentoring program and with careful instruction the evaluation team identified a comparison group of youths matched to intervention group participants on family income, age, gender, and other characteristics. ANCOVAs assessed changes from preintervention to postintervention and indicated significant improvement in perceived social supports, positive role-model, and adult children burden for the intervention group. For distal outcomes, results indicated that there were statistically significant differences favoring intervention group over controls on self-esteem, self competence, and positive connectedness to school. The findings of this study supported the positive influence of mentoring on youths in low-income families. In conclusion, practice and policy implications as well as further research topic were discussed in light of searching for the design and implementation of effective mentoring programs as well as more in-depth assessment of relationship and contextual factors in the evaluation of programs.
