본 연구는 구조방정식 모형을 이용하여 가정환경과 학교경험이 청소년의 시민성(사회참여의식, 공동동체의식)에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 교육종단연구 자료를 이용하였으며, 고3 학생을 대상으로 분석하였다. 중3때 시민성 수준을 모형에 포함하여 내생성의 문제를 완화하였으며, 변수간의 시차를 이용하여 인과 관계를 더욱 명확히 하였다. 분석결과, 가정환경과 학교경험이 시민성 형성에 영향을 미치는 주요한 경로를 발견하였다. 첫째, 부모의 SES는 가족관계와 문화활동, 봉사활동을 매개로 시민성 형성에 영향을 미쳤다. 둘째, 가족관계는 직접적으로, 또 학교활동이나 교사․교우관계, 그리고 사회적 유능감을 매개로 시민성 형성에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 학교경험은 직접적으로, 또 사회적 유능감을 매개로 시민성 형성에 영향을 미치는 것을 발견하였다. 시민성에 대한 여러 변인들의 총효과를 살펴보면 학교경험과 비교하여 가정환경의 효과가 상대적으로 큰 것을 알 수 있다. 이 연구는 지지적․수용적 가족관계와 친밀하고 상호호혜적인 교우관계, 비교과 학교활동이 시민성 발달에 가지는 긍정적인 영향을 발견하였으며, 학교경험이 시민성 발달을 촉진하는 하나의 메커니즘으로 사회적 유능감의 효과를 규명하였다는 것에 의의가 있다.
Abstract
The present study examined the effect of family background and school experience on the formation of citizenship on the part of adolescents using structural equational modeling. From an analysis of the Korean Education Longitudinal Studies, the key pathways of citizenship formation were uncovered. First, family SES has an effect on the citizenship formation of the child, and it is in turn mediated by positive family relationships, participation in cultural activities and volunteer work. Second, the effect of family relationships on the citizenship formation of the child impacts both directly and indirectly, through extracurricular activities, social relationships within school, and social efficacy. Third, school experiences such as participation in extracurricular activities and social relationships within school improve the citizenship formation of the child both directly and indirectly, and this is mediated by social efficacy. The total effect size indicates that the effect of family background is much greater than that of school experiences. This study found that supportive and warm family relationships, intimate and reciprocal peer relationships and extracurricular activities have positive effects on adolescents' citizenship formation and further suggests that social efficacy is one of the processes by which school experience may promote citizenship formation on the part of students.
