Abstract
First, the fertility rate (number of children per household) among non-regular workers and workers at small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) was lower in all years over the past decade. As of 2023, the fertility rate was three times lower for non-regular workers (0.36) than for regular workers (1.09), and 1.8 times lower for small businesses (0.71) than for large businesses (1.21). Second, panel regression analysis was used to estimate the determinants of fertility rates. Even after controlling for various factors, non-regular workers had a 14.1% lower fertility rate than regular workers, and small businesses had a significantly lower fertility rate than large corporations by 2.8%. Third, estimating the "employment type by company size" variable by segmenting it into six levels showed that, compared to the reference variable of "regular workers in large corporations," "non-regular workers in small corporations (-16.6%)," "non-regular workers in medium sized corporations (-13.1%)," "non-regular workers in large corporations (-11.9%)," and "regular workers in small corporations (-2.4%)" had the largest negative impact. These analytical results imply that non-regular workers and workers in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), facing unstable employment and low incomes, are more likely to forgo childbirth.
