Abstract
The study analyzed the impact of the gap in the labor market between female workers and household heads on childbirth using data from the ‘Korea Welfare Panel’ for 17 years (2005-2021). The results are as follows. First, the birth rate of women was four times higher for permanent workers than for temporary workers, and three times higher for large companies than for small and medium-sized companies. Second, even when controlling for various factors through panel regression analysis, the birth rate of women working full-time was 2.8 times higher than that of temporary workers, and the birth rate of women working in large companies was 1.4 times higher than that in small and medium-sized companies. Third, the results of analyzing the difference in birth rates of married householders indicated the birth rate of full-time workers was higher than that of temporary workers in all years over the past 17 years, and that of household heads of large corporations was higher than that of small and medium-sized households. Fourth, the results of estimating the determinants of the birth rate of married householders through panel regression analysis indicated that full-time workers were significantly 1.1 times higher, and the birth rate of householders of large corporations was 1.1 times higher than that of small and medium-sized households. These analysis results suggest that in order to increase the birth rate, the employment stability of women and non-regular household heads must be increased.
