Abstract

Through a theoretical reflection of the modernist approach to nationalism, this article aims to review theories of nationalism related to modernities and articulate the dynamics of nationalism as a political-economic construction. Nation and nationalism were evaluated through an extreme point of view between Hegelian idealism and the Marxist notion of ideology. In such dichotomous approaches, nationalism as a product of political modernity was viewed as political idea, ideological doctrine, and the state’s political movement. In addition, existing research focused on the causal relationship between industrialization/capitalism and nationalism in terms of economic modernity. Through defining nation as an ensemble of reality and imagination, this article explores modernity and nationalism in the interaction between politics and economy, and state and class, and emphasizes the dynamics of nationalism that operates as a power fused into other identities.
