Abstract

Through the Brussels Effect, the European Union is establishing its environmental, social, and governance regulations as global standards, significantly impacting the African agricultural sector. This study analyzes the influence of EU sustainability regulations, particularly the EU Deforestation Regulation and child labor prohibition policies, on African agriculture while examining the responses of African nations to these regulatory changes. The findings indicate that EU regulations have positively contributed to improving agricultural productivity and quality in Africa while promoting sustainable trade structures. However, high compliance costs and complex administrative procedures have posed substantial burdens on small and medium-sized agricultural producers. Notably, Uganda's coffee industry and the cocoa sectors in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana are implementing supply chain tracking systems and modifying production methods to meet EU regulatory standards. Nevertheless, some countries face potential trade barriers due to technical and financial limitations. This study emphasizes the need for enhanced cooperation between the EU and Africa, along with expanded technical assistance and infrastructure investment, to address these challenges effectively.
