Abstract

This study examine specifically the meanings of 'Yong' and 'courage' based on the Four Books after setting out to review the meanings of the letter 'Yong(勇)'. 'Yong' is characterized by the absence of fear. It can be classified into external 'courage' to signify valiant and strong and internal 'valor' based on 'In(仁)' and 'Ui(義), 'bold determination,' ' This distinction can be examined according to the concepts of 'Daeyong(大勇)' and 'Soyong(小勇).' The desirable type of 'Yong' that people need to pursuit is 'Daeyong' based on 'In(仁)' and 'Ui(義),' and it can be expressed as 'vast spirit(浩然之氣).' The moral education on today is likely to practice focusing on cognitive and emotional approaches. However, the moral inquiries based on cognitive and emotional status can be extremely difficult to carry out since there are a number of external elements to be considered. It means that only internal 'valor' is focused except external 'courage.' Physical education also seems to address only external 'courage.' As seen with the 'archery courtesy.' However, the internalization of moral values accompanied by physical activities is essential to the practice of moral values. Physical activities which are regarded as independent subjects should be taken into consideration along with the approaches of moral education. Because It is necessary to look at the relations between moral education and physical education. The study shed light on relations between 'courage' and 'valor' focusing on 'Yong' and examined connections between moral education and physical education through 'archery courtesy.' In the future, we will need to compare them with western counterparts to specify the modern meanings of 'courage' and ensure the legitimacy of rational interpretations through diverse researches on the integrated progress method of moral education and physical education.
