한국 총요소생산성 변동의 동태적 결정요인:무역변수를 중심으로

초록

본 연구는 한국경제의 시계열자료를 이용하여 수출, 수입과 총요소생산성간의 관련성을 실증 분석하였다. 대외교역과 생산성간의 인과관계를 검증하고, 이를 근거로 생산성 변동에 영향을 미치는 다양한 변수를 포함한 회귀방정식을 추정하였다. 추정결과, 수출과 생산성간의 인과관계는 상대적으로 미약한 것으로 나타난 반면 수입에서 생산성으로의 뚜렷한 인과관계가 존재하였다. 총요소생산성 결정요인에 관한 회귀분석결과도 수출이 생산성에 미치는 영향은 유의하지 못하거나 장기적으로 오히려 負(-)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 그러나 수입은 장ㆍ단기적으로 생산성에 유의한 正(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 추정되었다. 수입ㆍ생산성 관계의 구체적인 경로를 분석하기 위해 수입변수의 세부항목을 생산성 결정식에 포함시켜 추정하였다. 그 결과 중간재 수입을 제외한 소비재와 자본재 수입의 영향력이 두드러진 것으로 나타났다. 특히 소비재 수입이 생산성에 유의한 영향을 미쳐 수입대체산업과의 경쟁심화로 인한 혁신유발효과를 가져오고 있음을 시사한다. 본 추정결과는 수출이 다양한 경로를 통해 수출기업의 생산성 향상을 유도하고 이는 한국경제 고도성장의 중요한 요인이 되어왔다는 기존 연구결과와 상이한 것이다. 본 연구는 한국경제가 향후 지속적인 시장개방이 가져오는 생산성 증가요인을 잘 활용해야 함을 제안한다. 본 연구의 총요소생산성을 GDP로 바꾸어 추정할 경우에 인과관계는 변화가 없었으며, GDP 증가에 미치는 수입의 긍정적인 효과가 최종재의 수입증가로 인해 발생함을 보여주었다.

Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between trade and economic growth in Korea during the period 1980~2003. The empirical results suggest the existence of Granger causality running from imports to total factor productivity (TFP) growth, and the relatively weak causal relationship between exports and TFP. In light of this causal relationship between imports and TFP growth, TFP growth is regressed on various trade variables, along with R&D investments and government size. The results indicate that imports have significant positive effects on TFP but that exports do not. The results also indicate that the salutary impact of imports on TFP growth stems not only from competitive pressure and new knowledge acquired from foreign rivals in the context of increased imports of final goods but also from technological transfers embodied by imports from developed countries. Most of the empirical results still hold when TFP growth is replaced with GDP growth.
