무역과 생산성 증가: 한국 제조업의 경우

초록

무역과 경제성장과의 관계를 거시적 측면에서 분석한 많은 연구결과들은 거의 예외 없이 경제의 높은 개방도 또는 그에 따른 높은 무역의존도는 높은 경제성장률과 밀접한 연관관계를 가지고 있음을 보여주고 있다. 그러나 최근, 무역을 수출과 수입으로 구분하여 그것이 총요소생산성(Total Factor Productivity: TFP)향상에 어떠한 영향을 미쳤는지를 미시적 측면에서 분석한 연구결과를 보면 그 분석의 대상국가와 시기에 따라 서로 엇갈리는 결과를 보여주고 있다. 본고에서는 1984～2000년 동안의 한국제조업을 대상으로 수출과 수입 등이 총요소생산성의 향상에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 실증적 분석을 통해서 밝혀보고자 하였다. 분석결과, 생산성 격차의 수렴효과(convergence effects)와 연구개발투자를 통한 기술혁신 그리고 명목보호율의 감소 등이 한국 제조업의 총요소생산성 증가율을 높인 주요 요인이었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 그리고 수출은 미약하나마 생산성 증가에 긍정적인 효과를 미치고 있음을 발견할 수 있었으나 수입의 효과는 매우 불분명한 것으로 나타났다.

Abstract

Numerous previous empirical studies that have investigated relationship between trade and economic growth in the macroeconomic context, almost invariably point to evidence showing strong links between the degree of openness, or the consequent dependence on trade, and the growth performance of the countries concerned. Yet many recent studies that have examined relationship between trade - with imports and exports being separated - and the growth rates of total factor productivity (TFP) in the microeconomic context, tend to provide rather mixed empirical results, depending upon countries and time periods used in the sample data. This study attempts to explore whether, and the extent to which, imports and exports have affected the growth rates of TFP for the Korean manufacturing industries during the period of 1984-2000. The empirical results show that among others such variables as convergence effects, R&D intensity, and low nominal protection rate have been important in promoting TFP growth for Korea's manufacturing. However, only weak evidence was found for the positive effects of exports on TFP growth whereas no systematic effect on TFP growth was found for imports.
