초록
본 논문은 18세기 청교도 목사이자 미국 식민지 시기의 위대한 철학적 신학자인 조나단 에드워즈의 성령론을 체계적으로 탐구한 논자의 연구의 한 부분이다. 에드워즈의 성령론은 몇 가지의 특징을 가지고 있는데 무엇보다도 삼위일체론적 특성을 가지고 있다고 말할 수 있다. 역사적으로 그의 삼위일체론에 대한 많은 논란과 시비가 있었지만 현금의 에드워즈 학계에 있어서는 그의 삼위일체론이 니케아-콘스탄티노플 신경에서 정립된 정통적 삼위일체론을 충실하게 대변하였다는 점을 대체로 인정하고 있다. 그의 생전에는 삼위일체론을 다룬 어떤 글도 출판한 적이 없었지만, 그가 회심이후 부터 그의 생애 말년까지 정통적인 삼위일체론을 믿고 변호했을 뿐 아니라 삼위일체 하나님을 체험하고 살았다는 것을 분명하게 확인할 수 있다. 그의 회심 사건을 중심한 초기 생애에 대해서 집중적으로 기록하고 있는 그의 『자서전』속에서 그는 이렇게 고백하고 있다: 그리고 하나님은 삼위일체이시기에 영광스럽게 보여졌다. 성부, 성자, 성령이라는 삼위로 존재하신다는 것이 내게는 하나님에 대한 품격 높은 사상을 가지게 만들었다. 에드워즈는 조금 뒤에 가서 노스햄튼 목회 초기에 경험한 한 체험에 대해서 다음과 같이 고백한다: 나는 여러번 삼위일체 하나님 중에서 세 번째 위격의 영광을 느꼈고 성령의 거룩하게 하 시는 사역을 느꼈다; 그 분의 거룩한 역사들 속에서 신적인 빛과 생명을 영혼 속에 전 하시는 [것을 느꼈다]. 하나님은 성령의 전달하심 속에서 신적인 영광과 달콤함의 무한 한 샘으로 보였다. 그 샘은 영혼을 채우고 만족시키기에 충만하고 충분했다. 그것은 태 양의 광채가 달콤하고 즐겁게 빛과 생명을 나누어 주는 것처럼 달콤하게 쏟아 부어지면서 전달되었다. 그리고 에드워즈는 자신의 신학적 묵상을 사적으로 기록한 Miscellanies 속에서 다음과 같이 자문자답을 하고 있다:나는 때때로 홀로 이런 생각을 하곤했다. 삼위일체 같은 교리들과 규례들이 참이라면 어떤 필요에서 복음 속에 그런 것들이 계시되었을까? . . . 나는 이런 교리들이 얼마나 유용한지 경험적으로 알고 있다. . . 이와 같은 교리들은 영적인 세계에 대한 지식과 식견, 그리고 궁극적인 실재에 대한 묵상으로 이끄는 영광스러운 관문이다. 나는 이러한 지식이 마음의 수양에 얼마나 많은 기여를 하는지 경험했다. 이상의 인용구들만 보더라도 에드워즈의 삼위일체론, 특히 내재적 삼위일체론은 난해해 보이고 오해의 가능성도 있지만 에드워즈의 삼위일체론은 체험적이고 실천적인 중요성을 가지고 있다는 것을 짐작해 볼 수 있다. 에드워즈는 생애 만년인 1757년 2월 11일자로 당시 하버드 대학의 교수였던 에드워드 위글스워스(1693-1765)에게 편지를 보내어서 뉴 잉글랜드에 만연하고 있던 반(反) 삼위일체론 분위기에 대해서 이의를 제기하면서, 특별히 조나단 메이휴가 공개적으로 삼위일체론을 조소하고 있는데 젊은 신학도들에게 신학을 가르치고 있는 위글스워스 교수가 나서서 직접 정통 삼위일체론을 변호해야 하지 않느냐는 취지로 권면을 하기도 하였다. 이처럼 회심 체험 이후부터 시작해서 생애 만년까지 에드워즈의 삼위일체론은 정통적인 입장에 서 있었다고 말할 수 있겠다. 그러면 이제 본격적으로 우리는 그의 삼위일체론의 특징들을 살펴 보고, 특별히 성령에 대한 삼위일체론적인 견해를 정리해 보도록 하겠다. 그러기 위해서는 먼저 그의 삼위일체론이 개진되고 있는 여러 자료들에 대해서 확인해 보고, 삼위일체론에 대한 연구사를 간략하게 살펴보도록 하겠다.
Abstract
In this essay, I have examined Edwards' Trinitarian Pneumatology. His doctrine on Trinity has been attacked by many scholars but correlated writings and publications proved it's orthodoxy. Although his doctrine on Trinity has some puzzling passages (especially immanent Trinity), but his doctrine on Trinity as a whole is in conformity with orthodoxy. Now we appraise that he is the very person who explained the triune God's mutual equality and unity very appropriately. And we have come to know that his explanation on Holy Spirit is one of the best parts in his theology. He emphasized that the Holy Spirit's role and equality, And he especially pointed out that the Holy Spirit is not only the One who applies the redemption, but also the sum of the blessings that have been purchased by Christ's redemption. These are the distinctive features of his doctrine of the Holy Spirit.
