학문과 신앙 그리고 기독교 대학: 헨드릭 반 리센의 사상을 중심으로

본 논문은 많은 기독교 대학들이 세워졌지만 대부분 점차적으로 그 기독교적 정체성을 상실하고 세속화되고 있는 현상을 주목하면서 그 이유가 무엇인지 그리고 기독교 대학이 정체성을 잃지 않기 위해 지켜야 할 가장 중요한 핵심 가치는 무엇인지에 대한 문제의식에서 시작되었다. 그러면서 이 주제에 대해 진지하게 연구한 네덜란드의 기독교 철학자였던 헨드릭 반 리센의 사상에 있어 학문과 신앙 그리고 기독교 대학이 서로 어떻게 연결되어 있는지를 고찰한다. 반 리센은 볼렌호븐 교수의 뒤를 이어 암스테르담 자유대학교의 철학 교수가 되어 학문과 신앙의 통합, 기독교 기술 철학 등을 집중적으로 연구하고 가르쳤다. 나아가 그는 기독교 대학들이 왜 세속화되는지를 분석하면서 기독교 대학과의 본질적인 차이가 무엇인지를 밝히고 진정한 기독교 대학의 정체성을 지키기 위해 어떻게 해야 할 것인지를 구체적으로 제시하고 있다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 그의 관점을 체계적으로 살펴보고 현대 한국적 상황에 적용, 평가해 보고자 한다.
Abstract
This article deals with Hendrik Van Riessen(1911-2000)’s thought on how science, faith and Christian university are interrelated. In order to do that, I have explained how he became a professor of philosophy at Free University in Amsterdam, succeeding professor Vollenhoven, and concentrated in teaching the integration of faith and science and the identity of Christian university. The first part of this article discusses his view of science and faith and the second part deals with his view of Christian university. He reveals that the idea of human autonomous thinking and science based on that are neither objective nor neutral but are thoroughly founded on a religious belief. Due to this misconception, he argues that the universities which had started with Christian worldview became secular. After clarifying what is the true identity of Christian university with historical evidences, Van Riessen explains how to restore and keep the identity of Christian university. Having tried to apply his perspective into Korean context because many Christian universities have been secularized and are losing its Christian identity, I have emphasized that the Christian scholars keep trying to integrate their scientific disciplines with biblical faith and this integration should be revealed in their concrete and practical lives. Only then their authenticity and integrity will be recognized by non-Christians.
