한국 선교사의 선교적 영성훈련 실태와 대안

초록

본고의 목적은 한국 선교사의 영성훈련 실태를 전반적으로 고찰하고, 이를 바탕으로 선교사영성훈련을 위한 대안을 찾는 데 있다. 이를 위하여 첫째로 선교사와 영성, 선교사와 영성훈련을 살펴보았다. 둘째로 한국 선교사 영성훈련 현황을 파악하기 위하여 “영성을 점검하는 방법은 무엇인가? 영성훈련에 대한 인식은 어떠한가? 영성훈련의 실태는 어떠한가? 이상적인 영성관리 방법은 무엇인가?”로 연구 설계를 하였다. 연구 과제를 파악하기 위하여 선교사에게 설문조사 방법을 통하여 응답된 자료를 토대로 종합적인 분석을 하였다. 그 결과 많은 선교사들은 영적 탈진을 경험하고 있음이 밝혀졌다. 대부분 선교사는 영성으로 인하여 선교사역 지속성 여부에 큰 영향을 받고 있었다. 따라서 선교사의 건강한 영성을 위하여 영성훈련 대안을 모색할 필요성이 제기되었다. 본고는 연구 설계에 따른 결과를 바탕으로 한국 선교사를 위한 영성훈련 방향을 대안으로 제시하였다. 먼저 선교대학원은 교과과정을 비롯한 다양한 변화가 요청된다. 영성교육 과목을 필수 교과목으로 선정하고, 영성을 증진하기 위한 소그룹 활성화, 영적 인턴십 제도 도입, 영성교육 방법을 비공식적이고 비형식적인 방법으로 실시, 영성 관련 학점 교류 등을 시도할 필요가 있다. 둘째로 선교사를 선발하는 과정에서 후보자 영성을 다각도로 점검하는 절차가 필요하다. 이를 위하여 선교 영성지수를 주관적인 방법과 객관적인 방법으로 측정할 수 있도록 개발이 이루어져야 한다. 셋째로 선교사 영성훈련은 통전적으로 실시되는 것이 바람직하다. 각 선교훈련원은 공동으로 선교사 영성 증진을 위한 특성화된 자료를 지속적으로 개발하여 공급하도록 협력이 이루어져야 한다. 또한 영성훈련은 선교훈련원 별로 실시도 필요하지만, 영성훈련 전문기관에 위탁하여 영성훈련 인증제를 실시하는 것도 바람직한 대안이다. 다섯째로 선교사로 파송된 이후에도 파송기관과 선교훈련원은 선교사와 협력하여 건강한 영성관리가 되도록 영적지도가 요청된다. 이를 위하여 영적 멘토링 관계를 정착시키고, 거점별로 선교지에 홀코뮤니티를 세워 선교사가 온전한 영적, 심리적 회복을 위한 쉼터로 활용되도록 할 필요가 있다.

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to investigate the actual condition of spiritual discipline among Korean missionaries and to design ideal models of spiritual discipline on the basis of investigation. This research is composed in two parts. The first part examines some theories of the missional spiritual discipline of missionaries to build up the concept of spiritual discipline. The second part is to explore the present state of spiritual discipline of Korean missionaries which raises the questions: “What is the proper method of checking spirituality? What is the understanding of spiritual discipline like? How is the actual condition of spiritual discipline? What is the ideal method to manage spirituality?”To offer possible answers to those questions, this part gives a comprehensive examination on the basis of materials obtained through interviews with Korean missionaries and questionaires. According to this analysis, many Korean missionaries have experienced a spiritual burnout status, which has significantly influenced the continuance of missionary work. Therefore, it is necessary to address this manner by suggesting some ideal methods for spiritual discipline in order for missionaries to maintain their spiritual health. On the basis of the results from this investigation, this research suggests some models of spiritual discipline for Korean missionaries. First, graduate schools of mission should attempt to invoke multiple changes including their curriculums. Spiritual discipline should be a mandatory subject. The following are also necessary: Revitalization of small group for the promotion of spirituality, a spiritual internship program, informal or nonformal spiritual methods for spiritual education, a credit exchange program for spirituality related subjects, etc. Second, it is necessary to examine the spirituality of missionary candidates during the selection process. It is also imperative to measure the missional spiritual quotient according to subjective and objective methods. Third, it is vital for a missionary's spiritual discipline to proceed in two ways. On one hand, missionaries should train themselves according to their own disposition and personality, in following their own preference. On the other hand, missionaries also train themselves through other methods of spiritual disciplines that may not be as preferable. All the while, it is necessary to write in a spiritual journal, to have quiet time, to say short prayers, and to pray while fasting. Fourth, spiritual discipline methods should work comprehensibly. In particular, some informal and nonformal spiritual methods should be actively applied to missionaries. Every missionary training center should consistently develop and supply specialized materials for the spirituality of missionaries. In addition, it is crucial to entrust a specialized organization for spiritual discipline and to authenticate the spiritual training program. Fifth, after being sent out as missionaries, they should be lead to cooperation with other sending organizations and missionary training centers. In order to accomplish these goals, it is vital to establish a spiritual mentoring relationship, to provide a solid community for the complete spiritual and psychological refreshment of missionaries at every base.
