Abstract

This paper deals with the epistemological doctrine of intentionality as differently seen in Augustine and Husserl. The doctrine of intentionality is a crucial factor that determines whether the objective consciousness and knowledge of a being is possible. Augustine asserts that we are unable to objectively recognize an object itself because of intentionality, the essential property of human consciousness, but Husserl opposes his assertion. Whereas Husserl appeals the pure Ego to reach at the truth of pure objectivity with the notion of intentionality, Augustine emphasizes that intentionality is the primordial cause of the error of human consciousness and thereof the most miserable nature of human being is to direct toward himself (Ego), whatever he does. Augustine’s intentionality is directly related to the will of the soul, to which the whole of mental activities, especially consciousness, are subordinate. Henceforth, if the will of the soul itself is depraved, all human activities are under the reign of error. For Husserl, however, the notion of intentionality is connected with the consciousness of the Ego and thence human being can be in touch with the objective knowledge of an object as truth, which Augustine ascribes to God alone. In conclusion, this paper embraces Augustine’s view of intentionality as the pivotal factor, on whose account human beings cannot get the objective knowledge of God and creatures, without the aid of Scripture and the illumination of Holy Spirit.
