Abstract

This paper focuses on the interpretation of what Deuteronomy 29:4 means. In interpreting the Book of Deuteronomy, this verse belongs to a kind of difficulty passage. Deuteronomy 29:2–9 testifies that the Israelites have seen the great signs and wonders that God had done for Israel in wondering paths. The text in verses 5-6 is also based on the discourses in verses 2-3, more specifically, Moses restates, 'Yahweh your God provided the daily needs and food of the Israelites in the wilderness journey. However, in verse 4, the speaker (Moses) proclaimed, 'God has not given them an understanding mind, perceptive eyes, or discerning ears until now!' What does it mean? I suggest a reading this assertive statement as a paradoxical expression. Supported by some recent scholars (Fernando and D. A. Thompson, etc.), the argument that the speaker is using a paradox is convincing. Did Moses preach to the 2nd generation of Exodus that Yahweh did not empower them to understand, discern, and perceive? If so, the text is an ironic speech that cannot be understood. It is true that the Hebrew Bible contains a diverse of rhetorical devices and figurative language. if we may read this verse as a paradoxical device, we find out how harmony verse 4 is in relation to verses 2-8 and 9.
