츠빙글리의 성화론: 그의 신론, 교회론, 국가론과 연결하여

초록

츠빙글리의 성화론은 그의 신론, 교회론, 국가론과의 연계성 속에서 그 특징이 잘 드러난다. 그의 신론은 하나님 주권 중심 사상 및 삼위일체적 특징이 강하게 드러난다. 그의 성화론이 지니는 하나님 중심적인 토대는 성화론이 로마 가톨릭적 공로주의에 빠지지 않게 해 준다. “하나님의 뜻”에 대한 츠빙글리의 강조는 루터의 신학에서 발견되는 율법과 복음의 불필요한 긴장을 해소시켜 준다. 츠빙글리에 따르면, 참된 교회란 교회의 유일한 머리가 되시는 그리스도의 말씀에 신실하게 순종하고 점점 성화되어 가는 공동체이다. 츠빙글리는 지상의 교회를 “혼합된 몸”이라고 부른다. 신자와 불신자가 섞여 있기 때문이다. 하지만 그는 성화가 참된 교회와 거짓된 교회를 구분하는 기준이 될 수 있다고 본다. 특히 그는 권징과 직분론과 목사의 설교 사역 및 총회와 같은 외적 제도를 통하여 교회가 성령의 성화를 경험할 수 있다고 주장한다. 교회와 국가에 대한 자신의 이론에서 츠빙글리는 자신의 고유한 “신정” 개념을 발전시킨다. 그는 위정자와 목회자 모두 하나님의 주권적 통치를 확립하고 복음을 증진하기 위해 노력해야 한다고 강조한다. 그는 “하나님의 정의”와 “인간의 정의”라는 개념을 구분하는데, 전자가 내적인 정의라면 후자는 외적인 정의이다. 하지만 그는 신자가 이 두 가지 정의를 복음 안에서 함께 추구해야 한다고 주장한다. 이 점에서 츠빙글리는 당시 재침례파의 일방성과 편협성을 극복하고 있다. 헤르만 바빙크가 잘 지적했듯이, 츠빙글리는 종교개혁자들 가운데 기독교인의 삶이 지니는 사회적 측면을 가장 포괄적으로 강조하고 있다. 츠빙글리의 성화론은 로마 가톨릭의 공로주의 및 비복음적 요소를 극복한다. 또한 그것은 칭의가 성화를 자칫 침해할 수 있는 루터 신학의 위험성에 빠지지도 않는다. 그것은 신자의 삶의 영역을 사회정치적 차원에서 상당히 축소시켜 버렸던 재침례파적 한계를 뛰어넘는 탁월성을 보여준다. 요약하자면, 츠빙글리의 성화론은 이 시대 개혁신학이 필요로 하는 매우 건실한 교리이다.

Abstract

Zwingli’s doctrine of sanctification is evident in its connection with his doctrines of God, church, and state. His doctrine of God is well-featured in the ideas of the sovereignty of God and His trinitarian character. The God-centered foundation of his doctrine of sanctification keeps it from falling into the merit theology of Roman Catholicism. Zwingli’s emphasis on “the will of God” relieves the unnecessary tension of law and gospel, which was found in Luther’s theology. According to Zwingli, the true church is a community that faithfully obeys the Word of Christ who is the only head of the church, and is sanctified more and more. Zwingli calls the earthly church a “mixed body” as much as believers and unbelievers are mixed in it. He believes, however, that sanctification can be the standard that distinguishes the true church from the false church. In particular, he argues that the church can experience the sanctification of the Holy Spirit through disciplines, church offices, pastoral preaching, and external systems such as synod. In his theory of state and church, Zwingli develops his own concept of “theocracy.” He emphasizes that both the magistrate and the pastor should strive to establish the sovereign rule of God and to promote the gospel. He distinguishes between the two conceptions of “the righteousness of God” and “the righteousness of human beings”; the former is an inward righteousness, and the latter is an outward one. He is convinced that believers should seek these two righteousnesses together in the gospel. In this respect, Zwingli overcomes the unilaterality and intolerance of the Anabaptists of his time. Among the Reformers, as Herman Bavinck points out, Zwingli emphasizes most comprehensively the social aspects of the Christian life. Zwingli’s doctrine of sanctification overcomes both the merit theology and non-evangelical elements of Roman Catholicism. Neither does it fall in danger of Luther’s theology, in which justification can infringe upon sanctification. It also demonstrates excellence beyond the Anabaptist limits that significantly reduce the sphere of the life of believers at the social and political levels. In summary, Zwingli’s theory of sanctification is a very sound doctrine that is needed by Reformed theology of our time.
