Abstract
The purpose of this study is to address the common misunderstanding that Ulrich Zwingli’s doctrine of justification is primarily moralistic and ethically centered, often characterized as an “analytic justification.” By closely examining his major theological works, this paper aims to demonstrate that Zwingli’s view is, in fact, more consistent with a “synthetic” model of justification. From the perspective of Reformed Life Theology, this study emphasizes that Zwingli’s doctrine of justification is not confined to a conceptual or dogmatic formulation, but is a lived reality of faith that takes shape in the believer’s personal life and within the Christian community. The study explores Zwingli’s understanding of justification through key concepts in the ordo salutis—repentance, faith, and sanctification—which he perceives as organically interconnected. For Zwingli, justification is a holistic salvific event in which the Holy Spirit actively transforms the life of the believer. His doctrine of justification thus extends beyond the mere imputation of righteousness through faith, and moves toward a Spirit-led life marked by practical sanctification. This research ultimately shows that Zwingli’s doctrine of justification aligns with the aims of Reformed Life Theology, which seeks a theology grounded in God’s Word that deeply takes root in the believer’s entire person and real-life experience. Through this lens, the study explores the contemporary applicability of Zwingli’s theology and contributes to the expansion of the Reformed Life Theology’s horizon in its pursuit of integrating theology and life.
