Abstract
Zwingli is regarded as a person who inhibits the development of Christian art by prohibiting the use of music as well as removing the idols and icon from the church in the Zurich Reformation. He abolished the use of idol, icon, and music, which were regarded as idolatry, in worship reform in order to carry out worship of God-centeredness. His arguments reflected the shift of philosophical viewpoint from moderate realism to extreme realism, the separation of the second commandment from the first commandment, the denial of the educational function of the idol and icon, as well as the pastoral view that the poor are the true image of God. Therefore, his iconoclasm reflects not only the theological and pastoral point of view, but also the nature of the social reformer who tries to solve socio-economic problems at the time. Zwingli thus prevented the use of Christian art if it was abused as an idol worship. However, in the absence of such element, he acknowledged the legitimate use of Christian art. He prevented Christian music from being used in the Church of Zurich, but he did not condemn the use of it in another local churches. He did antiphonal recitation of Gloria and the Apostles' Creed for religious education of the adults, and permitted the recitation of individual psalms. Therefore, it can be seen that Zwingli is open to the legitimate use of music that is beyond idolatry. Zwingli allowed images to be used for normal use, not idolatry. Such a best example is a positive interpretation of the use of cherubim and decorations in the Ark of the Covenant, the Tabernacle, and the Jerusalem Sanctuary. And he acknowledged the statue of Charlemagne as an expression of historical events, and permitted the use of stained glass of church windows. At the same time, he intends to spread the message of the Reformation as well as to pursue educational purposes by actively using illustrations developed from the viewpoint of humanism in book publishing and Biblical production. Therefore, Zwingli prevented the use of icon, idol, and music which was abused as idolatry from the point of view of reforming the corruption of the late Middle Ages. However, he also actively used images and illustrations when they were used in its normal purpose. Today, therefore, we must seek to use Christian arts, including images, positively in the right place that God allows.
