Abstract
Regulative Principle of Worship, which was supported by John Calvin and created by Reformed and Presbyterian churches, forbids whatever Scripture does not command in their worship. In the part of the Westminster Confession of Faith (21.1), specifically, the use of visual representations in worship settings is obviously prohibited, based on The Second Commandment, “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them (Exod 20:4).” Since visual arts in worship are seen as idolatry, the visual arts have been regarded as distractions from true worship. As a result of the lasting heritage of the Reformation, churches in the reformed tradition tend to believe that using visual arts in worship is unnecessary and even dangerous. The only correct form of worship is “spiritual worship,” which is focused on hearing the Word and avoiding trust in material objects. This paper, however, points out that many Reformed churches in various cultures are using not only various visual arts to reach out to our changing society but also digital technology as a visual artistic tool to inspire and engage people in worship. In the debate about worship and in the critical shift from using various art forms to influence current cultural trends, careful historical and biblical reflection on worship and the visual arts is necessary to build an acceptable form of worship. For this reason, the purpose of this paper is to provide a right understanding for the use of the visual arts in Reformed worship by examining their biblical and historical use in worship. In light of careful examinations, visual arts in Reformed worship will be reappraised in a positive way. For the first part biblical examination of using the visual arts in worship will be followed with a discussion on idolatry. And a brief history of the visual arts in Christian worship and contemporary challenges will be followed.
