도르트 신경은 도르트 총회에 참석한 개혁파 총대들과 항론파 간의, 그리고 개혁파 총대들 간의 산고와도 같은 고통스럽고 치열한 토론과 논쟁의 결과물이었다. 그리고 그러한 논쟁의 중심에는 난해한 문구가 있었다. 난해한 문구는 이해하고 받아들이기 힘든 예정론과 관련된 문구들로서 항론파가 개혁파를 공격하기 위해 사용했던 주된 도구였던 동시에 개혁파 총대들 간에서도 도르트 신경 결론에서 이 문구를 정죄해야 하는가, 하지 않아야 하는가에 대한 논쟁을 일으켰던 장본인이었다. 도르트 총회에 소환되어 참석하였던 항론파 대표들은 그들의 견해를 진술, 설명, 변호하기보다는 유기 교리를 통해 개혁파를 곤란에 빠뜨리고 총회에 참석한 개혁파 내에 존재하던 소수의 타락전 선택론자들을 다수의 타락후 선택론자들로부터 고립시키고자 하였다. 그러나 이러한 항론파의 계획은 결국 실패로 돌아갔고, 비협조적이고 완강한 태도로 일관하였던 그들은 결국에는 총회에서 추방되었다. 이로써 난해한 문구와 유기 교리로 인한 논쟁은 일단락되는 듯하였으나, 도르트 신경의 결론을 작성하는 가운데 난해한 문구와 관련하여 다시금 논쟁이 발생하였다. 항론파의 잘못된 주장들만을 정죄하자고 주장하였던 대다수의 대표단에 맞서 영국, 헤세, 브레멘 대표단이 도르트 신경의 결론에서 난해한 문구도 함께 정죄하자고 주장하였기 때문이다. 이로 인해 총회는 내홍을 겪기도 하였지만 난해한 문구를 정죄하지 않는 것으로 결론을 내리고 몇 차례의 수정을 거쳐서 도르트 신경 결론을 작성하였다. 이러한 난해한 문구 논쟁은 유기 교리와 난해한 문가가 칼빈주의 예정론의 차별화된 특징이 된다는 것과 타락후 선택설의 용어로 도르트 신경을 작성했던 도르트 총회가 타락전 선택설 역시 포용하였음을 보여준다.
Abstract
The Canons of Dort was the fruit of heated and fiery discussions between the Remonstrants and the Reformed, and among the Reformed who were the members of the Synod of Dort. And hard sayings were in the middle of these heated discussions. Hard sayings are expressions which are hard to understand and to accept, which are related to the doctrine of reprobation. They were used as tools to attact the Reformed by the Remonstrants in the Synod and caused controversy among the Reformed whether they have to be rejected in the Canons Conclusion or not. Summoned by the Synod, the delegates of the Remonstrants tried to make the Reformed delegates get in trouble by the doctrine of reprobation, and to separate the supralapsarians who were a minority from the infrolapsarians who were a majority in the Synod. But they failed, and were expelled from the Synod by reason of their uncooperative and stubborn attitudes. After their expulsion, the trouble regarding hard sayings would not happen again. But another controversy regarding hard sayings happened while the Synod had composed Canons Conclusion. This controversy happened because England, Hesse and Bremen delegations strongly argued that hard sayings be rejected in Canons Conclusion while majority of the delegations did not agree with it. However, three delegations which argued hard sayings to be rejected gave in for the sake of peace and Canons Conclusion was finally composed after several revisions. This hard sayings controversy shows that the doctrine of reprobation and hard sayings is a distinctive feature of predestination in Calvinism, and the Synod of Dordt which produces the Canons of Dordt by infralapsarian expression embraces supralapsarianism as well.
